There are many views of the spiritual gifts in the Christian church but certainly we are witnessing another outpouring of the Holy Spirit. (Acts 2:17, James 5:7) In 1 Cor. 14, the Bible clearly states that all spiritual gifts are important, enhance spiritual ministry and are to be respected. Spiritual gifts were meant to foster teamwork, not division.
Knowing whether we have a motivational gift, a charismatic gifts or an office call, greatly increases our ability to partner with God for His purposes. For our testing purposes here, we have included those who are gifted as missionaries and psalmists.
The New Testament describes many spiritual gifts in the church. (Eph. 4:11, Rom. 12:3-7, 1 Cor. 12:1-12) They are best understood under the headings of:
Office Call Gifts or Five
Fold Ministry Gifts
Apostle, Prophet, Evangelist, Pastor, Teacher
Service, Exhortation, Giving, Leadership, Mercy, Helps, Administration
Wisdom, Knowledge, Discernment, Prophecy, Tongues, Interpretation, Faith, Healing, Miracles
In St. John 20:22 Jesus breathed on the disciples and said, Receive ye the Holy Ghost ... In Acts 1:8, Jesus told them, … but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth. NASU
Their motivation was not to receive a certain gift or gifts, but to receive power in order to be a witness. They waited for the Holy Ghost to give them power from on high and continued to depend on His power from day to day. All spiritual gifts are the gifts of the Holy Spirit, who is pleased to lift up Jesus Christ and to glorify Father God through us. Caution: Just because the Holy Spirit operates through a person in spiritual gifts does not mean that God endorses their disobedience or flawed character. Spiritual fruit may be more important that spiritual gifts.
Paul exhorted young Timothy to stir up the gift that was within him and not to be afraid! Paul said, Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands. 7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. 2 Tim 1:6-7 NKJV
1 Cor. 14:1 Pursue love, yet desire earnestly spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy. NASU
